Siemens, Russian Railways Launch Regional Train Production
Russian Railways and Siemens launched the production of regional trains for the Russian city of Sochi.
The US$850.8 million (€580 million) contract, which was created in 2009, calls for the supply of 54 Desiro RUS-type regional trains. The first 38 will be built at the Siemens plant in Krefeld, Germany. The remaining 16 trains will be manufactured starting in 2012, Siemens said.
The Desiro-type trains can run at a top speed of 160 km/h. In Russia, the trains are known as Lastochka, or the swallow. The first units should be operational in fall 2013, the company said.
