Tognum To Make Marine Engine Upgrades
Tognum announced the development path its MTU Series 2000 yacht engines will follow to meet U.S. EPA Tier 3 recreational and IMO Tier 3 emissions regulations.
The new Series 2000 M96 engines will be able to cover outputs up to 2600 bhp (1940 kW) and comply with IMO Tier 2 and EPA Tier 3 regulations using in-engine technology only, the company said. Compliance with IMO Tier 3 will be possible with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment, Tognum added.
Despite the lower exhaust emissions, the manufacturer said that a reduction in fuel consumption will still be achieved. The new engines for pleasure craft compliant with EPA Tier 3 recreational will be available in 2014. Launch of the IMO Tier 3-compliant units will take place in early 2016.
