Swedish Coastguard Order for Damen

Posted on December 23, 2005

Damen Shipyards Gorinchem has announced the award of a contract from the Swedish Coastguard in Karlskrona. The contract covers design, engineering and construction of two 80 meter multi purpose vessels to be deployed by the Swedish Coastguard for carrying out patrol duties, environmental protection and salvage operations with the aim to safeguard the Swedish coast against maritime hazards of any kind and nature. An option for a third vessel may be called by the client within the first stage of the contract.

Extensive oil recovery equipment will be installed and the vessel's performances are fully in line with the anticipated duties and according to the latest technology presently available. Particular attention has been given to the reduction of fuel consumption by applying a state of the art diesel-electric propulsion system with five generator sets and azimuth thrusters. Predominant patrol operations at reduced speed will result in considerable fuel cost savings, still at technically sound power-management conditions.

Building of the vessels will take place at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania, while Schelde Naval Shipbuilding will take care of the total contract management until final handing over. Delivery of both vessels is scheduled for April and October 2008 respectively.
