GE Records V228 Engine Orders from Asian Shipbuilders

GE Transportation recenlty announced it will supply 24 V228 medium-speed diesel engines under three separate contracts with three Asian shipbuilders. The engines, which will be manufactured at GE’s facility in Grove City, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., will power four harbor tugboats and eight Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels.

For the first contract, GE will provide SLS Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., Changwon, Korea, with eight V228 diesels. This marks GE’s first marine diesel engine order in the Republic of Korea. The V228 diesels will power four, 34 m harbor tugboats; each engine will be rated at 1307 kW at 900 r/min. GE expects to deliver the engines in late 2008, with installation scheduled in 2009.

Under a separate contract, GE will provide Yuexin Shipbuilding Company, Ltd., Guangdong, People’s Republic of China (PRC), with eight V228 diesel engines. The 16-cylinder engines will power four new AHTS vessels to be built by Yuexin Shipbuilding for end user Tidewater Inc., New Orleans, Louisiana. The V228 diesel engines each will be rated 3057 kW at 1050 r/min, and will be delivered to the Yuexin shipyard in Panyu, PRC, in 2010. Delivery of the tugs to Tidewater is slated for 2011. This is a follow-on order with Yuexin Shipbuilding.

For the final contract, GE will supply NGV Tech Sdn. Bhd., Selangor, Malaysia, with eight 12V228 engines. This marks GE’s first marine diesel engine order in Malaysia. Two engines, each rated 2178 kW at 1000 r/min, will power four, 60 m AHTS vessels to be built by NGV Tech for end customer Bakri Navigation Co. Ltd., Saudi Arabia. The engines will be delivered by GE in late 2008, and will be installed in 2009 and 2010.
