Wabtec Corporation has announced that its MotivePower subsidiary has signed a US$12.7 million contract to build commuter locomotives for the Mid-Region Council of Governments in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A. which is planning to initiate commuter rail service in the region. The contract includes five MPXpress locomotives, spare parts and training to be delivered in 2005. The locomotives will feature EMD 16-645-F38 diesel engines rated 2685 kW with microprocessor controls to increase acceleration, improve fuel efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions. The locomotives will be manufactured in MotivePower’s Boise, Idaho facility and will be similar to those built for the Caltrain commuter line of San Francisco, California, U.S.A. in 2003.
