R-R Gas Turbines for New European Pipeline Project
Rolls-Royce has won an order from MEDGAZ for three of its latest technology RB211 gas turbine packages to power a new Mediterranean sub-sea pipeline to transport natural gas from Algeria to Spain. The gas line, scheduled for completion in 2009, will carry gas for 210 km on the seabed from the coastal city of Beni Saf in Algeria to the Spanish province of Almeria.
The three 32.8 MW RB211-6761 DLE units will be installed at the Beni Saf terminal to provide the front-end gas boosting required for the underwater pipeline, which will reach a maximum water depth of over 2160 m. The pipeline will provide eight billion cubic metres of natural gas per year directly to the European market.
Tom Curley, president of the Rolls-Royce energy business, said: “We are delighted to receive this order for RB211-powered packages. We have already supplied seven RB211 units to Europe Maghreb Pipelines Limited to power another sub-sea gas pipeline (GME pipeline) from Algeria to Spain, via Morocco, and these have been operating since 1996. Now, we are very pleased to be chosen to supply equipment to power the next Algeria to Spain pipeline project.”
