Double Duty For Cat Power

Posted on February 2, 2010

Caterpillar Power Generation Systems (Caterpillar PGS) has been selected to provide two 16CM32 medium-speed diesel generator sets for a cogeneration power plant that will produce over 25 MW of power in Paramaribo, Suriname. Currently, the plant is operating two similar Cat generator sets providing 14.3 MW to the Tout Lui Faut crude oil refinery owned by the Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname, N.V. State Oil Company.

The new generator sets are expected to be fully operational during the second quarter, 2010. The new equipment will bolster the plant’s steam output that the refinery relies on for its crude oil treatment and will also provide a higher amount of electricity to the local power company.

Staatsolie turned to Caterpillar when the company realized the potential for growth in the exploration and refining of crude oil. The Republic of Suriname is the sole shareholder of the company and realized that, with the proper power generation system, it could not only capitalize on the wealth of onshore crude existing in Suriname, but it could also provide even more electricity to the community.

Staatsolie was founded in 1980 and has developed from a grass-roots operation to a significant contributor to the Suriname economy. Drawing crude from fields in Tambarejedo and Calcutta, a 55 km pipeline is used to transport materials to the Tout Lui Faut refinery. The refinery has the ability to process 7000 barrels per day. The new generator sets will allow the company to expand its ventures to the coastal areas of Commewijne, Nickerie, Calcutta and Tambardejo, resulting in higher outputs of both refined crude and electric power.
