Mitsubishi Taps Growth Markets

Posted on February 24, 2010

Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corp. (VINASHIN) has completed production of its first Mitsubishi-UE low speed marine diesel under a technology licensing arrangement with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). Production was undertaken at Bach Dang Diesel Engine Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a VINASHIN affiliate.

The first engine completed is the 7UEC45LA with a cylinder bore of 450 mm, featuring a power output of 6230 kW at 158 r/min. The unit will be installed as the main engine on a 22 500 DWT bulk carrier of VINASHIN Petroleum Investment and Transport Joint Stock company. Bach Dang Diesel is expected to manufacture three more UE engines this year and further plans to expand production, leveraging its annual capacity potential of 200 000 brake hp.

In other news, the licensing agreement between MHI and Zhejiang Yungpu Heavy Machinery Co. Ltd. (YUNGPU) in China's Zhejiang Province recently became effective. YUNGPU is the third Chinese company to be licensed Mitsubishi-UE technology, further accelerating penetration into the Chinese shipbuilding market, where strong growth is expected.

The engines licensed to YUNGPU are the UEC37LII and UEC33SII, small-size marine diesels with cylinder bores of 370 and 330 mm, respectively. Under the licensing agreement, YUNGPU can manufacture, sell and provide after-sale services for engines in China. YUNGPU plans to complete manufacture and delivery of its first unit by the end of 2010.
