Filtering Switch Locomotives In LA Ports

Posted on January 3, 2011

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has selected several projects to showcase the emission-reducing effects of advanced clean engine technologies, including one project with advanced particulate filter technology for switch locomotives operating the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in California, U.S.A.

Those Los Angeles ports, along with Union Pacific Railroad and Johnson Matthey, will test a Johnson Matthey locomotive PM filter system. CARB will provide the matching funds as part of its Air Quality Improvement Program under the Assembly Bill 118. The project should be completed on June 30, 2012, according to Johnson Matthey.

The Air Quality Improvement Program is an incentive program that authorizes CARB, through 2015, to fund the demonstration of projects that reduce emissions.
