PrintWärtsilä Takes Natural Gas To Low Speed

As part of a company strategy, Wärtsilä has started a project to further develop its low-speed engine portfolio to include gas engines, alongside its medium-speed dual fuel engines.
A new engine will be installed in the Trieste engine laboratory in Italy in March this year, with engine testing commencing shortly after. The main goal of the move is to strengthen the company’s position in gas engine technology, Wärtsilä said.
A growing awareness for alternative fuels exists in today’s marine market, with natural gas having a big potential as a fuel source, Wärtsilä said. Dual-fuel engines also are an option sought after by operators, because it allows them to switch between gas or diesel fuels.
