Cat Engine Upgrade Lowers Emissions

G3516 LE engine upgrade minimally invasive; power rating, fuel tolerance remain same

Posted on January 29, 2014

Caterpillar Oil & Gas has made available its low emissions engine upgrade kit for select G3516 LE petroleum engines in gas compression applications.

The upgrade kit allows operators to modify existing engines to a lower emissions configuration, enabling operation at 0.5 or 1.0 g/bhp-hr NTE NOx levels, the company said. The engine upgrade is an economic, minimally invasive solution that allows the engine to offer the same power and fuel tolerance while simultaneously increasing altitude and turndown capability, Cat said.

The power rating for the G3516 LE will remain the same at 1 MW at 1400 r/min. New components in the kit include a two-stage aftercooler, venture fuel mixer, turbochargers, oil cooler, air cleaners, gas shutoff valve and software. Existing engines must have the ADEM A3 engine control module, air fuel ratio control (AFRC) and a NOx sensor. Upgrade kits are available to bring engines up to this configuration, the company said.
