Cummins Launches New Ultra-Low-Emissions QSK50 Locomotive Engine

Cummins Inc.announced that it has successfully certified the new QSK50 locomotive engine to U.S. EPA 40CFR Part 1033 Tier 2 and EU Stage IIIA certifications. The engine achieves the required line-haul composite NOx of 4.0g/hp-hr and is recognized by the California Air Resources Board (ARB) as an Ultra-Low-Emissions Locomotive (ULEL) engine.

Cummins Modular Common Rail System (MCRS), Quantum electronics and advanced combustion expertise have been utilized on the QSK50 to meet these industry-leading low-emissions levels. The new QSK50 ULEL engine is a key part of Cummins locomotive engine lineup with engines tailored specifically for the needs of rail customers around the world.

“The ULEL QSK50 engine builds on the success of the Cummins QSK19 in ultra-low-emissions locomotive applications and is an excellent choice for railroads that need a 2000-horsepower (1491 kW), single engine, low-emissions solution. The QSK50 also provides customers with the same high levels of performance and dependability that they have come to expect from Cummins,” said Chris Riley, Marketing Director for Cummins Rail Business. The V16 50-liter QSK engine features ratings from 1800-2000 horsepower (1342-1491 kW) for line-haul locomotive and switcher applications and provides over 45 percent reduction in Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) compared to Tier 1 levels. The QSK50 shares the same power cylinder and fuel system as the 700-horsepower (522 kW) inline-6 QSK19 and the 1500-horsepower (1119 kW) V12 QSK38.

“With thousands of Cummins 50-liter engines in service, Cummins has leveraged the experience of the predecessor K50 platform and applied the MCRS fuel system and Quantum engine electronics to develop the QSK50. Further refinement of the combustion strategy has enabled the 2000-horsepower QSK50 to achieve industry-leading low-emissions levels, California ARB ULEL certification, as well as achieve the power and performance demands of our rail customers” continued Riley. The MCRS fuel system maintains high injection pressures, regardless of engine speed, for exceptional performance at every rpm, raising fuel economy and lowering operating costs, all while providing improved response and load pickup with lower noise and vibration compared to competitive unit injection-style systems. The Quantum electronics on the QSK50 offer programmable features that optimize engine performance to specific duty cycles and job requirements, provide continuous monitoring of engine conditions and adjust for peak operation. Proven power cylinder, one-piece cast-iron block, heavy-duty crankshaft and connecting rods allow a long life-to-overhaul of up to 875,000 gallons (3,312,235 liters) of fuel burned with no midlife overhaul required.
