Posted on July 8, 2010

FuelCell Energy Inc., a manufacturer of power plants using renewable and other fuels for commercial, industrial, government and utility customers, signed a contract to procure fuel cell stack module assembly and conditioning equipment for POSCO Power, the company's South Korean partner.

The production equipment will be used to assemble and condition fuel cell stacks in South Korea using fuel cell components supplied by FuelCell Energy. The production equipment is expected to be shipped this year. Installation in response to the Renewable Portfolio Standard passed by the South Korean Legislature in March, which mandates 350 MW of additional renewable energy per year through 2016.

POSCO Power began constructing a fuel cell stack assembly plant in South Korea in April, reporting that the plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 100 MW. It is scheduled to be completed in December, according to POSCO Power.

Under a separate contract, POSCO Power also has ordered a 300 kW DFC 300MA fuel cell power plant, which will be used to develop market applications that target grid support as well as provide emergency power for installations requiring an uninterrupted supply of power. The South Korean government is providing financial support for the purchase of this fuel cell power plant and associated development activities.
