MTU Engines Being Used In Landing Craft Prototype

MTU is participating in the Partial Air Cushion Supported CATamaran (PACSCAT) project with its marine 4000 series engines. The catamaran is a landing craft with air-cushion support. MTU is supplying the main drives for the prototype currently being tested for the British Ministry of Defense, the company said.

The ministry is testing various landing craft prototypes with a high-loading capacity and higher speeds than conventional landing crafts. The aluminum-made PACSCAT is 30 m long, 7 m wide and has a loaded weight of 175 tons.

Two MTU 16V 4000 engines, with an output of 2720 kW each, power two hydrojet drives, while two further engines inflate the air cushions to make the craft even faster, according to the company. Initial tests in fall 2010 revealed a top speed of nearly 40 knots.

MTU said that the Royal Marines also tested the landing craft with the transport of five amphibious vehicles simultaneously, or a 62-ton tank. The PACSCAT was designed and jointly built by the Griffon Hoverwork shipyard and the British defense company Qinetiq.
