Low NOx MAN B&W Power for New PSV

Posted on June 6, 2006

MAN B&W Diesel, Denmark has added another interesting contract to the recent series of new offshore references. A power package of four MAN B&W Holeby GenSets has been specified for the Norwegian District Offshore ASA (DOF) newbuilding from Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted, Norway. The vessel will be the first MAN B&W Diesel-Electric powered Platform Supply Vessel, based on the L21/31 engine series.

The 74 meter PSV, derived from a MT-6009 design and engineering package by Marin Teknikk AS, Norway, will be optimized for DOF’s operational offshore services in the North Sea. The newbuilding is expected to be taken over by DOF during spring 2007. After delivery DOF will place the vessel on a long time charter with Shell UK.

The GenSets, which are scheduled to be supplied to the yard during January 2007, will be delivered with an engine execution specially optimized for very low NOx exhaust gas emission values. The 2 x 6 cylinder and 2 x 7 cylinder MAN B&W Holeby GenSets, developing a total of 4940 kWe, will be certified to a NOx emission level of 8.0 g/kWh without any after treatment of the exhaust gas. This emission level is obtained with the latest (engine internal) optimization of the MAN B&W TCR turbocharger, the valve timing and a new piston crown design – without any increase of the L21/31 engines’ low fuel oil consumption.
