Alstom's Atlas Technology Brings Uniformity to European Rail Market

Posted on June 23, 2009

Belgium operator, Ifrabel inaugurated its new high speed L3 line, equipped with Alstom's Atlas Level 2 ERTMS control and signaling system. The 35-km line links Liege, Belgium with the German border via Aachen, is the first European cross-border high speed line equipped with Level 2 ERTMS technology.

Alstom also installed the Atlas system aboard four ICE3 trains and will equip the fleet's other six trains, coming into service in 2012. In addition, the Atlas solution has been installed on the L4 high speed line linking Antwerp, Belgium with the Dutch border.

The installation of this system on multiple lines represents a further step toward European rail market uniformity, which will facilitate border crossings, increase the lines' operational capacity, maximize traffic safety and reduce travel time.
