IHI Wins Destroyer Contract
IHI Marine United Inc., a shipbuilding unit of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., has won a 47 billion yen (US$447 million) bid to supply to the Defense Agency the hull of one of the largest destroyers ever built for the Japanese naval fleet.
To be completed by the end of March 2009, the 13 500 ton designated destroyer helicopter (DDH) ship is expected to replace the Haruna, a 4950 ton DDH that was launched in 1973. Only one helicopter can take off or land on the Haruna at one time, but the new vessel will be big enough to give three helicopters simultaneous access. The new warship is expected to carry 350 crew members.
