Catamaran Passenger Ferry Order for Damen

Posted on March 29, 2006

Damen has announced that a shipbuilding contract for five 42 meter catamaran passenger ferries was signed with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, on behalf of operator Istanbul Deniz Otobusu (IDO) in late 2005. This contract was awarded to Damen Shipyards Gorinchem in an international tender procedure, following the submission by Damen in July 2005 of a fully compliant technical proposal with the lowest price offer.

The five new “Sea Buses” for IDO are of the Damen Fast Ferry 4212 type; each can carry 449 passengers at over 30 knots speed while using less then 90% MCR. The vessel propulsion systems will include four, Caterpillar C32 diesels with a total output of 4180 bkW at 2300 r/min driving through twin Servogear HD 450 PTIR gearboxes into twin Servogear CPP. The vessels will also include twin 200 kWe Caterpillar C9 generator sets. All vessels will be constructed and outfitted at Damen’s specialist aluminum yard in Singapore and will arrive in Istanbul by early 2007.

IDO is responsible for all sea transportation of passengers and cars around Istanbul and the Marmara Sea. With ever growing transport demands in the greater municipality of Istanbul, of over 15 million inhabitants living on both sides of the Bosporus, IDO is currently involved in a significant fleet expansion and modernization program.
