New Vessel For Wind Farm Installations

Posted on March 29, 2011

Wärtsilä and Aker Solutions are teaming to develop and build a new vessel to aid in offshore wind farm installations. Wärtsilä will provide the ship design, electrical power generation, propulsion machinery and high-end automation, and Aker will supply the jacking system.

Wärtsilä will supply three 6L34DF and two 9L20DF dual fuel engines, which are also capable of running on LNG. Additionally, heat from the engine will be used to generate drinking water and to supply hot water for the crew. Absorption chiller units will provide air conditioning during the summer months.

Aker is applying its background in offshore drilling to develop a continuous hydraulic jacking system for truss legs. The vessel is marketed as a complete package, able to operate year round and meet IMO emission control areas.
