Cat Supplying Oil And Gas Power

Company will provide prime, backup power; jackup newbuilds due over next two years

Posted on March 20, 2014

Caterpillar Oil & Gas has been selected to provide 20 Cat C175-16 gen-sets and four C32 gen-sets to Longzhu Oilfield Services (S) Pte Ltd. to power four jackup newbuilds in China for FTS Derricks Pte Ltd., a subsidiary of Falcon Energy.

Five C175-16 generator sets, each with rated power of 1930 bkW at 1200 r/min, will be used as prime power for each jackup, with one C32 generator set providing emergency power for each.

The newbuilds are currently under construction at Shanhaiguan Shipyard in China and will be delivered over the course of the next 2 years, the company said.

The C175-16 is for customers seeking a high power density and lower emissions offshore drilling module, Cat said, adding that it offers 20% more installed power than previous models and allows deeper drilling and higher mud pump loading. It incorporates a fuel system that uses a high pressure fuel pump and control valve that deliver multiple precise injections within a single combustion event. Its compact footprint offers weight savings compared to medium-speed engines and allows for retrofit with Cat 3516C HD module design.

Cat said the full featured control system provides for easy interface with the local rig network and can be controlled and monitored remotely.
