GE Gas Turbines for Malaysian Refinery

Posted on May 5, 2005

GE Energy is supplying four gas turbines, additional equipment and services for a cogeneration plant located inside an oil refinery in Melaka, on the southwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The refinery is owned by PETRONAS Penapisan (Melaka) Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), Malaysia's national petroleum corporation. Based in Kuala Lumpur, the PETRONAS Group operates in 34 countries.

Under a contract of Euro 31.5 million, GE will provide four MS5001 (Frame 5) gas turbines, electric generators, a fuel gas treatment skid, NOx abatement skids, electrical starting motors, lube oil coolers and all auxiliaries for the gas turbine systems. Also included will be training and a two-year supply of spare parts.

The four Frame 5 gas turbines will produce a total of 72.6 MW for the cogeneration plant, and will operate on fuel gas only. The project will comply with local regulations and stringent health and safety requirements, and will follow a very tight time schedule. The gas turbines will be manufactured at GE Energy's oil and gas facilities in Florence, Italy, for shipment to the project site by November of 2005, with commercial operation scheduled in the first quarter 2007.
