New 4 MW Cat Gen-Set Introduced
Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division has expanded its 4 MW product range with the introduction of 20-cylinder C175-20 generator set. Cat also has a 4 MW 3612 model gen-set. Production scheduled for later this year.
The newly announced C175-20 is a higher speed engine destined for prime and continuous power applications as well as for standby power for large, mission-critical installations, such as data centers and hospitals, as well as water treatment plants, Cat said.
Built at Caterpillar’s recently expanded 1.5 million sq ft. Lafayette, Ind. facility, the C175-20 joins the 16-cylinder model 3 MW C175-16 gen-set. Available in both 60 Hz and 50 Hz sets, the C175-20 is rated 4.0 MW in standby uses; 3.6 MW in prime applications and 3.250 MW for continuous duty operation.
The power density of the C175-20 is a major selling point of the new gen-set Cat said, providing more power from a smaller footprint. A single 4 MW C175-20 represents a 55 percent reduction in footprint when compared with two, 2 MW 3516B generator sets and a 28 percent reduction when compared with a 4MW 3612, said Cat.
