Italian Paper Mill Updates Power Plant

Posted on October 27, 2009

GE Energy recently inaugurated the Alto Garda Power plant in northern Italy. A GE LM6000 PD Sprint aeroderivative gas turbine was installed in the Cartiere del Garda paper mill, replacing an older cogeneration plant. The new system will provide higher levels of efficient electricity generation while also dispatching power to the market producing steam for internal production processes and hot water for the local district heating network of the Riva del Garda town.

"It's worth highlighting the exceptional combustion performance of the new LM6000 gas turbine," said Paolo Mattei, president of Alto Garda Power. "The atmospheric emissions are half those of the former Cartiere del Garda cogeneration plant and well below the legal limit."

The LM6000 PD Sprint gas turbine generator package at the heart of the system generates approximately 46 MW of electricity. The exhaust gases are sent to a boiler which produces steam that is directed to a turbine to generate electricity or directly used for either internal production processes or hot water to feed the city's district heating network.

According to Alto Garda Power, the new district heating network will heat more than 4500 homes while also providing the added benefit of total displacement of 40 000 tones of CO2 equivalent annually.
