Tognum and Deutsche Bahn Celebrate 400th Repower

Posted on October 13, 2009

Tognum subsidiary, MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH along with Deutsche Bahn AG celebrated the 400th repowering of a V290-model multi-purpose locomotive. MTU has supplied 412 of the Series 4000 diesel engines to Deutsche Bahn.

The 8V4000 R41 engines with a power output of 1000 kW replace the MTU 12V 652 engines, some of which proved their worth for more than 30 years. The new engines have a higher output and reduce operating and maintenance costs. Due to their compact dimensions, they fit into the prescribed engine spaces and can also take advantage of the available peripherals. A tailored interface technology between MTU engine-management system and locomotive controls ensures a simplified installation of power units.

A key benefit of the ability to repower with new engines allows the operator, Deutsche Bahn to avoid having to invest in complete new locomotives.
