GE Transportation Debuts Trip Optimizer

Posted on October 13, 2010

GE Transportation has announced the debut of its Trip Optimizer, an ecomagination product that calculates the optimal locomotive speed for minimal fuel consumption.

The Trip Optimizer calculates the optimal speed profile for a trip based on a specific train’s makeup and route, automatically controlling the throttle to maintain that planned speed and save fuel.

The Trip Optimizer functions in two ways: automatic control, which maintains the planned speed automatically, or advisement mode, which tells the operator which throttle and dynamic braking levels to use to optimize speed and fuel consumption.

According to GE, the Trip Optimizer has already been outfitted on locomotives with four major North American Class 1 railroads. It also provides a fuel savings of 7% and a reduction of 37 000 tons of CO2, the company said.
