Norfolk Southern Orders Four PRC43C Locomotives

Posted on September 1, 2010

Norfolk Southern has ordered additional Tier 2-compliant PRC43C locomotives from Progress Rail Services, a subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc.

In 2008, Progress Rail and Norfolk Southern started developing the PR43C locomotive, spending the next two years building and testing the locomotive in the Norfolk Southern system. After successful tests, Norfolk Southern has ordered four additional PR43C locomotives, which will be delivered later this year.

The PR43C locomotives have a dual-engine configuration, with a Caterpillar C-175 rated 2685 kW as the primary engine and a Caterpillar C-18 rated 522 kW as the secondary engine that work in tandem to power the locomotive. The PR43C is also manufactured from reusable locomotive cores.

The four new PR43C locomotives will feature upgraded traction systems, control systems and modernized cabs, according to Progress Rail Services.
