Wärtsilä To Provide Tier 3-Compliant Engines For LNG Carriers

Posted on September 8, 2010

Wärtsilä will supply its Tier 3-compliant gas engines for a series of new LNG carriers, which will be built at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.

Each vessel will be powered by ship-sets consisting of three 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 50DF engines in a V configuration, and one six-cylinder inline Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engine. The scope of supply also includes the Wärtsilä UNIC C3 control system for each vessel.

The Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Co., the South Korean joint venture company owned by Wärtsilä and Hyundai Heavy Industries, will manufacture the engines, while the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard builds the ships. Delivery of the engines and other Wärtsilä equipment will start during the first quarter of 2012, with the first ship set for delivery in 2013.
