Generating Diamonds

Posted on September 16, 2011

The Russian NG-Energo concern has received an order for the construction of a 24 MW power plant for the JSC Severalmaz mining group in the north of European Russia. NG-Energo selected MAN Diesel & Turbo as the provider of the plant’s main generators that will comprise six MAN 18V28/32S Holeby-designed four-stroke gen-sets powered by diesel oil.

The new power plant will provide electricity to aid the exploitation of a European diamond deposit. Located in the Primorsky district in the Arkhangelsk region, about 100 km north of the city of Arkhangelsk, Russia, the mine has an estimated lifetime of more than 50 years with a potential value of €8.4 billion. About 60% of the raw diamonds are of gem quality.

NG-Energo will handle the construction, purchase, installation and the logistics for the project. The project will be executed within the course of a year in close cooperation between the customer and Order Project Management at MAN Diesel & Turbo in Holeby, Denmark.

The project will be carried out in two phases, the first of which is planned to commence in May 2012. MAN Diesel & Turbo is contracted to deliver the gen-sets in two batches of three engines with the first scheduled for December and the second for October 2012.
