Steam Turbines To Drive Compressor Trains

Siemens’ largest CO2 compressor to date headed to China coal liquefaction plant

Posted on April 25, 2014

China’s Shenhua Ningmei Coal Group has placed a follow-up order with Siemens Energy for four identical CO2 compressor trains. Each train consists of one STC-GV integrally geared compressor driven by an SST-600 condensing steam turbine via an intermediate gear.

The SST-600 is a single casing steam turbine designed for operation with speed ranging from 3000 to 18 000 r/min for generator or mechanical drives up to 150 MW. The turbine is used for both condensing and back-pressure applications, either geared or directly coupled, the company said.

The scope of supply also includes the associated auxiliary systems.

The compressor trains are destined for a coal liquefaction plant in Ningxia Province, in the northwest part of the country, and are scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2015. The end customer is Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group Co. Ltd. (SNCG), a subsidiary of the Shenhua Group, the largest coal producer in China.

The compressor trains will be produced in Europe, while the Siemens joint venture in Huludao, China, will deliver the auxiliary systems and handle local project management and engineering.
