Russian Railways Orders Locomotives With Siemens Technology
Russian Railways has ordered 221 locomotives from OOO Ural Locomotives, a new company recently formed as a joint venture with the Russian freight locomotive manufacturer OJSC Sinara Transport Machines and Siemens. The new company will build modern electric locomotives in Verkhnyaya Pyshma near Yekaterinburg, Russia.
Siemens, which has a 49% stake in the joint venture, will invest more than €100 million (US$122.4 million) to set up the modern freight locomotive production, which will create about 800 jobs. Siemens also will supply the electric traction components, which will be manufactured in St. Petersburg, Russia, and invest €20 million (US$24.5 million) to expand the production facilities for those components.
In addition to the locomotives, which are scheduled to be built by 2011, work also has begun to establish an engineering center for rolling stock in Moscow, a move that would create about 200 jobs for Siemens in Russia.
“Russia is a strategic growth market for rail technology,” said Hans-Jörg Grundmann, division CEO for Siemens. “Our all-around portfolio for modern and ecofriendly transportation technology positions us perfectly in the rolling stock and rail infrastructure markets.”
