Russian Railways To Buy 200 Electric Locomotives Produced by Alstom

Russian Railways and Transmashholding have signed a contract for the supply of 200 new-generation EP20 dual-system passenger locomotives for Russian Railways for delivery between 2012 to 2020.

A joint engineering company created by Transmashholding and the French firm Alstom Transport is developing the locomotives, which will be produced at the Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant.

The EP20 locomotive capable of driving a passenger train at speeds of 200 km/h. The locomotive will be equipped with an asynchronous traction drive using IGBT transistors.

The first EP20 models will be released in 2011, and will undergo several tests and state certification. In 2012 to 2013, the first 36 locomotives will be delivered to Russian Railways, which will use them for passenger services on the Moscow-Sochi route and for the Olympic Winter Games.
