New Rolls-Royce 44 MW RB211 Gas Turbine

Rolls-Royce has introduced the newest member of its industrial RB211 gas turbine family, the model RB211-H63. A 44 MW engine, Rolls-Royce said the new turbine, which utilizes technology from the company’s aero engines, is expected to deliver at least 30% more power, more efficiently, than earlier models.

The RB211-H63 is being developed by Rolls-Royce in Montreal, Canada, Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and Ansty, England. Final assembly and testing of the first engine will take place in Montreal in November. Commercial production is expected in 2012.

Announced at the Power Gen Europe exhibition this week in Amsterdam, the H63 is designed to deliver 11 MW more power with better fuel efficiency and has to the capability, Rolls-Royce said, for further power growth, up to 13%. Rolls-Royce said the new H63 has the same footprint as the current RB211-GT61 and RB211-G62 models. The 44 MW (ISO) rating comes with a Wet Low Emissions (WLE) combustion system. With a Dry Low Emissions (DLE) system the engine is rated 38 MW.

Besides power generation, the new RB211-H63 is also expected to find application in the compression and oil& gas industries. Rolls-Royce said that the weight, design and footprint make it applicable for FPSO vessels in both power generation and mechanical drive applications. For mechanical drive applications, Rolls-Royce is also developing a new high speed gas pipeline compressor with a maximum 3220 psig. The RFBB-30 compressor will be capable of housing up to five stages with a reported efficiency of 88% when matched with the new RT63 power turbine.
