Ansaldo begins powerplant construction

01 December 2021

Ansaldo Energia announced it has begun construction on a project intended to improve the efficiency of the EP Produzione combined cycle power plant in Tavazzano and Montanaso, in the Lodi province of Italy.

GT36 H-Class gas turbine Ansaldo Energia is installing a GT36 H-Class turbine at a combined cycle power plant in Italy.

Ansaldo Energia will carry out the construction of a new latest generation combined cycle with a power output of approximately 800 MW. As an EPC contractor, Ansaldo Energia will be in charge of the fullconstruction of the new production unit, from the foundations to plant start-up.

The heart of the combined cycle system consists of a GT36 H-Class gas turbine, two generators and a steam turbine. All the components were entirely manufactured at Ansaldo Energia’s production site.Along with the equipment, Ansaldo Energia has a multi-year contract for the maintenance of the turbine.

“We are very proud that EP Produzione has chosen Ansaldo Energia for the upgrade and the efficiency of its Tavazzano and Montanaso plant,” said Giuseppe Marino, CEO of Ansaldo Energia. “We are making available our best skills and most innovative technology to guarantee EP Produzione the success of this project and, at the same time, support Italy on its path towards the energy transition.”

The technology of the GT36, which Ansaldo Energia said is the most powerful ever made in Italy, is intended to give the plant greater flexibility and faster commissioning, the essential requirements to be able to provide the grid with an energy contribution if the share of renewable sources is not sufficient.

“It is a great satisfaction to be able to start working on this project we are quite keen on” said Claudio Nucci, chief operating officer of Ansaldo Energia. “We took the first steps of this collaboration in the difficult time of the pandemic, but we managed to reach this work start date on time, ready to support EP Produzione and work in full compliance with the agreed deadlines.”

At the peak of the installation, between 600 and 700 employees will work at the site. The start of the commercial operation is scheduled for Nov. 1, 2023.
