Cat Power For Healthcare Provider

By Mike Brezonick20 February 2019

Caterpillar Inc. announced that Summa Health, one of the largest healthcare provider systems in Ohio, has selected Ohio Cat to supply standby power solutions that will support expanded operations across its network, including the new 343,000 sq. ft., seven-story Patient Tower Addition under construction at its Akron Campus.

Summa Health recently purchased five Cat diesel generator sets to supply power for emergency services, surgeries, life support, and other acute patient care activities; data center backup; and other essential operations. The order includes three Cat C32 diesel generator sets with the high-density 1.250 MW rating and two units with the standard 1.0 MW rating. The C32 gen-set is based on a V-12 Caterpillar C32 diesel engine that has a bore and stroke of 145 x 162 mm and an overall displacement of 32.10 L.

The engine drives a four-pole, single bearing alternator designed to provide quick load acceptance and strong motor starting capabilities, which Cat said allows users to minimize oversizing the generator set due to motor starting requirements. Engine and generator functions are through Cat’s EMCP 4 control system, an integrated control and communications system engineered to provide a user friendly interface and simple navigation.

The gen-sets have been designed and tested to meet the NFPA power restoration requirement for Level 1 systems and accepts 100% block load in one step. They also meet ISO 8528-5 G3 requirements for steady state and load acceptance, Caterpillar said.

When the new generator sets are commissioned, Summa Health will have deployed a total of 18 Cat generator sets at its hospitals, free-standing emergency departments and other locations throughout northeast Ohio.

The Cat C32 generator sets will support Summa Health’s expanded operations, including the new 343,000 sq. ft., seven-story Patient Tower Addition under construction at its Akron Campus.

“Summa Health serves more than one million patients every year across our network, and we are committed to providing superior care for every one of them,” said Ed Friedl, vice president of construction and property management for Summa Health. “Reliable power plays an essential role in the care of our patients, which is why Summa has turned to Ohio Cat and Caterpillar many times to provide durable, reliable power solutions as well as ongoing service and support for performance when Summa needs it most.”
