Jenbachers Chosen For Chinese Expansion

21 September 2020

Eight Jenbacher gas engines have been commissioned at Chongqing Yuxin Energy’s Chongqing Songzao Coal Mine plant as part of an expansion of the site’s coal mine methane (CMM) gas-fueled power plant.

The 26.8 MW expansion is part of a total of 55.8 MW of gas engine power mostly consumed by load of coal mine. The surplus power is connected to local grid for community. The 3.35 MW Jenbacher gas engines capture the coal mine’s methane-rich gas to produce on-site power.

The project supports the government’s goals for CMM exploration and utilization to help reduce the country’s methane emissions and may enhance the new energy company’s profit.

“INNIO’s Jenbacher gas engines are our technology of choice to support our increased power delivery efforts,” said Daoping Yang, deputy general manager of Yuxin Energy. “We are pleased with INNIO’s technological expertise and professionalism, especially with the challenges presented by the coronavirus. This project is a key part of our work to help improve the energy supply in the region and significantly reduce the Songzao mine’s on-site methane emissions. The early commissioning enabled us to provide an additional power source for the local grid and power supply for the communities in the mountains nearby our site during the COVID-19 challenges.”

Each of the eight INNIO gas engines successfully passed a 168-hour trial run. During the testing, the gas engines’ systems, gas pretreatment system, electric system, and water purification system met the customer’s requirements. Chongqing Energy Investment Group’s use of the Jenbacher J620s units mark the first time use of imported brands for the Chongqing Songzao Coal Mine. INNIO was chosen due to its expertise, technology, flexible engineering design and high fuel flexibility to burn the available coal mine gas, the company said.

While the project was delayed because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the plant’s commissioning time has been beyond customer expectation. Upon the reopening of business, INNIO and INNIO’s distributor CAMDA engineers ensured that they were strictly abiding the epidemic prevention regulations in the plant during the commissioning.

“The Chongqing Songzao Coal Mine gas-to-power expansion project is another example of how the INNIO Jenbacher gas engine fleet delivers for our customer,” said Bright Yin, general manager of INNIO China. “We appreciate the trust in our technology given by Chongqing Energy Investment Group and look forward to continuing our support in helping deliver greener and more secure gas-to-power energy.”

For the project, INNIO provided the gensets, commissioning services for the generator sets and related equipment. In addition to the Jenbacher gas engines, INNIO’s distributor, CAMDA, provided related balance of plant equipment—including the radiators, silencers, control panels, exhaust boilers and associated equipment as well as installation and other services. CAMDA thorough project management helped in exceeding customer expectations related to the commissioning the plant despite the COVID-19 challenges.
