MAN Energy, Mitsui sign turbocharger agreement

MAN Energy Solutions (MAN-ES) has signed a 10-year license agreement with Tokyo-based Mitsui E&S Machinery (MES-M) for MAN’s new TCT axial turbocharger series, extending the partnership between the two companies and enabling Mitsui to provide the latest turbocharger technologies to the market. Mitsui, a global builder of marine two-stroke engines, has been a licensee of MAN-ES low-speed engines and turbochargers for decades.

In signing the agreement, Ichiro Tanaka, CEO, MES-M, said, “Mitsui’s philosophy entails building trust through the products and services that we offer the market and this turbocharger agreement builds on that. I am happy to expand our relationship with MAN Energy Solutions, our longstanding partner, and am confident we will deliver significant value to our customers.”

“Our new TCT series is based on years of hard-won experience and brings the best of turbocharger attributes to the market,” Dr. Daniel Struckmeier, head of Sales & Licence Turbochargers, MAN-ES, asserted. “This license agreement will further enhance Mitsui’s appeal within the two-stroke engine segment while highlighting the TCT series’ strengths. I believe it will prove an important milestone for both companies on our respective paths to increasing market share globally.”

The TCT turbocharger series was launched in 2019, and currently includes four models; it will ultimately grow to comprise six frame sizes, according to MAN-ES. A newly developed radial compressor and axial turbine are key components of the series, developed using new design features that result in a compact and lightweight turbocharger design.

Enhanced charging efficiencies, wide compressor maps and ample matching options enable TCT turbochargers to be easily matched to engines, MAN-ES stated. This includes covering a range of engine tuning options and fuel types, as well as requirements of today’s exhaust gas aftertreatment systems for IMO Tier III operations.

TCT-series turbochargers are suitable for two-stroke engines from 5.5 MW up to 24 MW per turbocharger, said MAN-ES. Typical applications include prime movers for container vessels, large bulk carriers or tankers.
