MAN Megayacht First

By Jack Burke17 July 2019

MAN Energy Solutions has received its first order for its 175D engine for an application involving a megayacht.

The diesel-electric propulsion system is comprised of five gensets with 12V175D-MEL and 16V175D-MEL engines. Consequently, it is not only the first yacht-related application for the MAN 175D, but also constitutes a significant milestone for the 16-cylinder version of the engine, the company said. Megayachts typically range from 24 to 180 m.

The  MAN 175D marine engine is designed to be compact and modular and has a bore and stroke of 175 x 215 mm. It received the Red Dot Design Award in 2015 and was also the winner of the German Design Award in 2016.

In order to minimize noise emissions and achieve a low structure-borne sound impact on the ship’s foundation, the gensets will be seated on double-elastic mountings. The requirement of IMO Tier 3 and soot-free exhaust gas emission can be achieved by means of the extremely compact MAN 175D SCR system in combination with a diesel particulate filter. For both 12V175D and 16V175D, identical SCR systems will be applied, each with two lines of urea mixer and reactor unit combinations. With an excellent power-to-weight ratio, airless operation and closed-loop NOemission control, the MAN 175D SCR offers a highly competitive solution for IMO Tier 3 applications. Thanks to its IMO NOx Scheme A certification procedure, the system can be installed directly without further on-board confirmation tests.

Once the ship sets sail, MAN Energy Solutions will continue to take care and will provide the newly introduced remote monitoring system, PrimeServ Assist. It allows owners to maximize the efficiency, safety and availability of the machinery and helps to reduce operational expenditure through proactive maintenance and performance optimization during the life cycle of the ship.
