MAN To Deliver Tier 3 Engines For Harbor Tug

MAN Energy Solutions will supply two of its IMO Tier-3-compliant MAN 175D engines for a harbor tug that will operate in the Mediterranean.

The two 12-cylinder MAN 12V175D MM diesel engines are rated at 2220 kW_m each and will be connected to fixed pitch propeller (FPP) azimuth thrusters for propulsion, while also providing power to support onboard towing and fire-fighting capabilities, the company said. The engines will be supplied in accordance with Lloyds Register Society classification rules.

The new harbor tug will be built in Spain by Drydocks World-Dubai shipyard. The Spanish ship design office Cintranaval has also been a key player in this process, offering expertise derived from designing up to 300 tugboats and offshore vessels over more than 50 years.

The tug boat is expected to enter service from mid-2020 for P&O Reyser, that will operate the 75-ton bollard-pull-rated Asymmetric Tractor Tug (ATT) in the Port of Barcelona, Spain.

The 12-cylinder variant of the MAN 175D engine range has an output ranging from 1500 to 2220 kW and is optimized for propelling ferries, offshore supply vessels, tug boats and other working vessels, the company said.

Other specialized engine models in the 175D range are available for applications such as super-yachts and naval marine applications. MAN said these engines have been designed from the outset with compliance to the latest, as well as future, exhaust-gas-emission requirements and utilize a very compact and flexible selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which enables vessel designers to optimize space on board.

This will be the first harbor tug for P&O Maritime, and also the first harbor tug for operation in the Mediterranean area, complying with IMO Tier 3, MARPOL Annex 6, MAN said.
