GE Technology for Chinese Steel Plant

Posted on December 29, 2005

Shanghai Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd and Baosteel Group Shanghai Pudong Iron & Steel Co., Ltd have selected GE Energy and Oil and Gas technology for the world’s largest COREX gas turbine combined-cycle power plant, to be located in Luojing, Baoshan District, Shanghai, China.

“While GE is well established in China’s power generation industry, this project marks a unique application of our technology for a steel mill in the country,” said Steve Fludder, president and CEO of GE Energy China. “Our global resources across multiple GE businesses developed an innovative technology package, including a Frame 9E gas turbine and large fuel gas compressors on a single shaft that is integrated into the advanced steel production process.”

The Luojing project will feature the integration of world-leading iron technology using a COREX melting furnace instead of the traditional blast furnace. The COREX melting furnace blasts with pure oxygen and generates abundant COREX gas at middle-heating value in the iron making process. Gas will be transformed into electricity through a 169-megawatt, combined-cycle power plant. The electricity will then be supplied to the oxygen plant and other end users at the Luojing facility.
