Posted on February 18, 2010

Fincantieri and the US cruise group Carnival Corp. have reached an agreement to build two prototype ships for Princess Cruises. At 139 000 gross tonnes and with a passenger capacity of 2600, the new ships will take up service in 2013 and 2014 and according to the company, will be the largest built to date for Princess Cruises' fleet.

Commenting on the agreement, Giuseppe Bono, chief executive officer of Fincantieri said, "This important agreement is a source of pride and optimism for us. Since these are prototypes, we hope that in years to come they will be followed by a substantial number of ships of the same family."

Since 1990, Fincantieri has built 52 cruise ships, of which 48 are for different brands in the Carnival Group. In addition to this recent agreement, Fincantieri will build a further 11 vessels between now and 2012--seven are for the Carnival Group.
