GE, Tülomsaº Introduce PowerHaul Locomotive

Posted on February 28, 2011

GE Transportation and Tülomsaº have introduced the first GE PowerHaul locomotive assembled in Turkey from components manufactured at GE’s plant in Erie, Pennsylvania, USA. The PowerHaul Series locomotive is GE’s most technologically advanced, fuel-efficient and low-emissions diesel-electric freight locomotive to date, GE said.

In 2008, the GE and Tülomsaº signed a Memorandum of Understanding to supply the market with PowerHaul locomotives. The 129 ton PowerHaul Series locomotive is designed to generate more horsepower and tractive effort while lowering fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to locomotives currently in use, GE said.

The locomotive features the new V16-cylinder, twin-turbo, 2760 KW PowerHaul Series engine, which is EU Stage 3a emissions certified. It also incorporates GE’s ac individual-axle traction-control technology, which allows the PowerHaul Series to haul heavier loads by reducing slippage on start-ups, inclines and suboptimal track conditions.

The locomotive is scheduled for a year-long testing program in Turkey in preparation for expanded operations as well as demonstrations for potential customers.
