Meeting The Grade For Tier 2
Wärtsilä’s first upgraded RT-flex68-D engine equipped with a variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger was successfully tested at Doosan Engine Co. Ltd. in South Korea. The engine is fully compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Tier 2 regulations, the company said.
The engine, which has a maximum continuous power of 21 910 kW at 95 r/min, has a slimmer outline to aid with installation requirements for container ships, and is the first of eight designated for installation in eight ships for a Chinese owner at a Chinese shipyard, Wärtsilä said.
The RT-flex technology complies with IMO Tier 2 regulations by providing flexible engine settings for low fuel consumption, low minimum running speeds, smokeless operation and better control over other exhaust emissions, the company said.
