Two Is Not Better Than One

Single unit provides reduction in footprint, operating costs

Posted on October 7, 2013

Finning Power Systems has developed its Caterpillar C175-20, a high-speed diesel generator set producing up to 4 MW of power from a smaller footprint.

The company said that a single 4 MW C175-20 represents a 55% reduction in footprint when compared with two 2 MW Cat 3516B generator sets, and a 28% reduction when compared with a 4 MW Cat 3612.

Cat said the C175-20 can also be used to generate prime power for remote work sites and in peak shaving applications. According to the company, the generator reduces operating costs by extending maintenance intervals – oil change intervals are every 600 hours for prime and continuous power applications. For standby generator sets, a three-year oil change interval option is available.

The C175-20 package is built on the proven C175-16 platform, which has demonstrated its reliability in Cat machines and other power generation applications since 2008. A ridged engine wiring harness protects critical engine circuits from damage and redundant control wiring minimizes the impact of electrical faults, the company said.
