A First For J-ENG

18 December 2018

Japan Engine Corp. (J-ENG) said it has received the first order for its 7UEC60LSE-Eco-A2-EGR engine from Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (Oshima) for a 99 000dwt bulk carrier.

The vessel will be operated by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line).

As a solution technology for NOx Tier3 regulation, one of the environmental regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), J-ENG has developed the low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system (LP-EGR), which the company said is the first attempt in the world to use it for two-stroke marine diesel engine.  J-ENG completed the onboard verification in April 2017.

J-ENG’s LP-EGR utilizes low-pressure exhaust gas from turbocharger outlet and has an economic advantage by reducing NOx drastically from the present Tier 2 regulation in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) while minimizing the increase of fuel oil consumption, the company said.

The UEC60LSE-Eco2 engine has a bore and stroke of 600 X 2400 mm and the seven-cylinder model offers up to 22 340 hp.

LP-EGR is designed to offer a simple system arrangement of exhaust gas recirculation line and main components with taking advantage of treating lower pressure and temperature gas, and to improve maintainability with reducing the operation costs, J-ENG said.

The company added that the LP-EGR system has no wastewater drainage from the water treatment system, which offers benefits considering possible restricted area expansion of drainage water in Northern America and/or Europe. This concept also offers simplified outfitting, operation and maintenance, the company said.

During Tier 2 operation, LP-EGR system can also attain flexibly to less fuel oil consumption by reducing the exhaust gas recirculation ratio in the future which improves both fuel oil consumption and NOx emission amount.

LP-EGR can be provided for other engine manufacturers in order to aim the global standard for Tier 3 technology, J-ENG said.
