A New Turbomachinery Teaming

03 April 2018

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has announced the integration of PW Power Systems (PWPS) within Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas. Originally acquired by MHI in 2013, PWPS — formerly Pratt & Whitney Power Systems — had been functioning as a stand-alone MHPS subsidiary prior to this integration.

“Integrating PWPS into MHPS Americas broadens our product portfolio and allows us to realize synergies between our various manufacturing and service centers in the United States, while also leveraging the global sales and service capabilities of MHPS and PWPS,” said MHPS Americas CEO Paul Browning. “We’re also excited to leverage PWPS’s gas turbine power plant turnkey capabilities and their industrial gas turbine parts and repair capabilities.”

Headquartered in Glastonbury, Connecticut, USA, PWPS is a global supplier of energy solutions for the power generation industry and provides an array of products and services. Its gas turbine product line includes aeroderivative gas turbines from 30 to 140 MW including the FT8 Mobilepac or FT8 and FT4000 Swiftpac packages, as well as aftermarket services and engineering, procurement and construction of turnkey systems.

“Our team at PWPS will benefit from full integration with another global turbomachinery OEM with industry-leading Dry Low NOx combustion technology, a significant American manufacturing footprint, and global sales and service networks,” said Raul Pereda, PWPS President and CEO. “PWPS customers around the world can expect a seamless transition and can look forward to enhancements to the industry-leading products and services they’ve experienced from us in the past.”

MHPS also announced the creation of a Power & Energy Solutions business focused on delivering customer solutions in the areas of digital power, energy storage and low carbon power generation.  MHPS Vice President Tom Cornell, an industry veteran with more than twenty-five years of technical and commercial experience in the global power industry, was promoted to lead the new business.

“As our existing power generation business continues to grow and capture market share throughout the Americas, MHPS is excited to announce this new investment in innovative technologies, new business models, digital tools, and customer partnerships to deliver solutions that take the cost and the carbon out of the entire generation, delivery, and consumption value chain of the power industry,” said Browning. “Tom has deep roots in the power industry and will lead a team of A-players to ensure that we’re collaborating with our customers as they negotiate the Change in Power that is underway in our industry.”

MHPS’ goal with the Power & Energy Solutions business, which is headquartered in Lake Mary, is to deliver comprehensive solutions utilizing a combination of the MHI Group’s most advanced proprietary technologies, complemented with industry partnerships and customer collaborations.

The business will launch with several solutions already commercially available and with several new products and solutions in late stage development. This business will also seek partnerships with academia, technology providers, and customers to develop next generation technologies, including:

– Expanded digital offerings from MHPS-Tomoni, which uses artificial intelligence and autonomous operation to improve energy efficiency, increase operational flexibility and predict equipment failures before they happen in any application where electricity is generated, distributed or consumed.

–  Next generation battery storage technology which surpasses Lithium-Ion cost effectiveness and performance.

– Solid oxide fuel cells for powering large data centers, commercial businesses, and other distributed power applications.
