A Power First For MAN In Japan

28 April 2020

MAN Energy Solutions will supply Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) two MAN 12V51/60 dual-fuel engines to a Japanese power plant, a first for the domestic power market.

The engines are bound for the Miyako Island power plant, which is owned and operated by the Okinawa Electric Power Co. (OEPC).

The dual-fuel engines will generate around 24 MW of electrical power in its role as the primary base-load provider for the small Japanese holiday island and its 50 000 inhabitants, improving efficiency as well as drastically reducing emissions.

“The order for Miyako is a first for the Japanese power-generation market as these will be the very first dual-fuel engines to be installed in the whole country,” said Martin Höhler, Regional Head of Sales for MAN Energy Solutions Power Plant business in the Asia Pacific region. “Now we want to prove to our Japanese customers the various benefits that dual-fuel engines offer in supplying remote regions with reliable and independent energy.

“We are also proud that Kawasaki Heavy Industries again trusts our engines as they are one of our longest-standing partners with a shared business history dating back to 1911.”

The 51/60 engine is designed to switch smoothly and seamlessly from gas to liquid fuel operation (and vice versa) at full load without any output and speed fluctuations. This feature makes it possible to use the engine in many different applications with a variety of fuels, the company said. The engine delivers maximum output combined with maximum flexibility and reliability. The 51/60DF supplies an electrical genset output range of 6,769 kW up to 20,431 kW.

MAN Energy Solutions also supplied two MAN 18V48/60B engines some years ago at a power plant on the neighboring island of Ishigaki.

“Our engines will mainly run on natural gas but, due to their dual-fuel capability, also offer maximum fuel flexibility and reliability, Höhler said. “This is highly important for independent power supply for remote islands such as Miyako.”
