Hydrogen-related announcements by INNIO, Caterpillar, Rolls-Royce and other companies were among the top stories of 2021.
1 - INNIO goes big into hydrogen
Engine maker INNIO said its Type 4 Jenbacher gas engines are now available for operation on 100% hydrogen or mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen.
2 – Cat moves into hydrogen
Caterpillar began offering Cat generator sets capable of operating on 100% hydrogen, including fully renewable green hydrogen, on a designed-to-order basis in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Rolls-Royce said its mtu Series 500 and 4000 gas engines will be capable of burning 100% hydrogen starting in 2023.
5 - Cat, Ballard launch hydrogen test project
Caterpillar and Ballard Power Systems have launched a three-year project to demonstrate a power system incorporating a large-format hydrogen fuel cell to produce backup power for data centers.
6 – Wärtsilä pioneering test program for pure hydrogen engines
Wärtsilä said it expects to have an engine and power plant concept capable of running on 100% hydrogen by 2025, enabling the transition to decarbonized energy systems around the world.

A 3.2 GW facility to produce green hydrogen and ammonia is under development in Ireland.
9 – Three Japanese engine makers plan new hydrogen company
The trio of Japanese engine makers working together to develop hydrogen-fueled marine engines will establish a new company to carry out the plan.
10 – New CEO for gas engine manufacturer INNIO
A new president and CEO at Austrian gas engine manufacturer was named in October.
