EDPR and Lhyfe partner to advance green hydrogen projects

Energy company EDP Renewables (EDPR), reported to be the fourth-largest producer of wind energy, and Lhyfe, a company involved in production of green hydrogen for industrial applications, have entered into an agreement to identify, develop, build and manage H2 production projects.

The goal will be to advance the complementary skills and capabilities of both companies, adding to each respective portfolio and building expertise in hydrogen project development.

Under the agreement, EDPR will supply renewable electricity to Lhyfe’s H2 generation projects, with the energy supplier taking up to a 50% stake. The partners will also work on R&D and procurement.

EDPR has targeted having 1.5 GW of green hydrogen production capacity in place by 2030. To support this, the company has created the H2 Business Unit, dedicated to identifying new green hydrogen production projects. The H2 will be targeted at steel and chemical industries, together with road transport.

EDP is already involved in a series of clean energy projects, including the 100 MW renewable hydrogen project in Sines, Portugal. Similar plans are moving forward in Spain and Brazil.

Through a collection of 93 different projects (to date), Lhyfe is planning to reach 3 GW of capacity by 2030. According to the company, 20 of those 93 projects are at an advanced stage of development.

For example, in September 2021, Lhyfe inaugurated what was reported to be the world’s first project involving direct connection of an industrial plant to a wind farm and seawater supply to support electrolysis. This has since started producing green hydrogen to fuel mobility in the surrounding region.
